The Catholic Church welcomes children into the Faith through the same process it uses to welcome adults, the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. This process is formally known as the Children's Catechumenate. At Prince of Peace, we call it Kid Cat, for short.
Kid Cat is the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults adapted for children who have reached the age of reason (typically around age seven), up to adulthood (around age 17). While it is primarily intended for unbaptized children who have had no religious formation, it also serves children who were baptized in another faith and want to become Catholic. It is also appropriate for those who were baptized Catholic, but who have had little or no religious education.
The Kid Cat process is similar to the adult catechumenate in content and ritual, but utilizes age-appropriate lessons and activities. We attend 9:30 Mass on Sunday mornings then, we are dismissed to our classroom to break open the Word and learn about our Catholic faith. Children typically spend about nine months in the process, during which they are prepared academically and spiritually to be brought into full communion with the Church at the Easter Vigil.
We will begin meeting Sunday, September 12th, 2010. If you are interested in enrolling your child in this process, please call to arrange an interview.
