This week Prince of Peace has been home to a large excavator and a rotating series of bulk trash containers. What’s been going on? Well, this week we are hard at work demucking our pond and removing the flatwork (parking lot) to prepare land for the foundation of our new chapel.
What does it mean to demuck a pond? And why is it taking so long?
Demuck is our word for “Clean up and clear out”.
Before we can fill the pond with dirt and start construction on our foundation, we’ve got to clear the area of all roots and debris. Remember those beautiful cypress trees we had growing around the pond? Well, they had large root structures that need to be excavated from the area. This is important because any foliage, dead roots, or other types of debris will eventually decay - and when they do, they will leave behind “space” in the dirt - space that water will eventually find and call home. Pooling water would compromise the foundation (remember Jesus’ parable of the Man who Built his House on Sand?) so we’re taking extra time to demuck the pond.
