Knights of Columbus, Council 11716
Knight of the Month, April 2024
The April 2024 Knight of the Month is Barry Sy. This award honors his support of the Knights of Columbus Council 11716 and to Prince of Peace as Scoutmaster of Boy Scouts of America Troop 404.
Barry joined the Knights of Columbus about 10 years ago, becoming a Third Degree Knight within the past two years.
He, his wife Cheryl of 25 years, and their three sons, Nicholas, 21 in July, Nathan, 16, and Nevan, 12, live in Fairview. They attend both POP and the Catholic community of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton.
As Scoutmaster of Troop 404 the past four years, Barry and his wife are proud that son Nicholas is an Eagle Scout, Nathan is a Life Scout and Nevan is a Tenderfoot Scout. The Troop meets every Monday night at POP for meetings involving leadership and life skills. As a troop, they sell seasonal mulch and Christmas wreaths and help place U.S. flags around the POP campus as part of the Honor Our Heroes program. Barry, actively involved in scouting for 15 years, is actively working to further engage members of Troop 404 in various projects that serve the entire POP community.
Barry and his three sons can often be found helping at the Knights fish frys and monthly breakfasts. His sons help with drink setup and cleanup and Nicholas also enjoys mixing eggs with a whisk.
Cheryl applies her project management skills to the Young Menβs Service League. Working at JPMorgan Chase, she leads a major Asian Heritage Month initiative and volunteers at the Allen Community Outreach Center, Samaritan Inn and Feed My Starving Children. Their sons volunteer for the Feed My Starving Children projects by preparing carefully measured food packages and supplemental nutrients that are shipped to the Philippines, Africa and other impoverished nations.
As an audio, video and smart home integrator for nearly 25 years, Barry serves clients throughout North Texas. Born in the Philippines, Barry moved with his family in 1973 to Vancouver, Canada. In 1979, Barry and his family relocated to Richardson and later to Plano during a time that his parents and he operated a large Chinese restaurant.
